Thinking Metric

News of a heatwave in Europe has me thinking in Celsius.

Don’t you think it’s time the United States finally switched over to the metric system?

What exactly is keeping us from adopting it? Money and stubbornness I think mostly.

Did you know the United States government is officially metric? The Metric Conversion Act of 1975 declared the metric system “the preferred system of weights and measures for United States trade and commerce” but permitted the use of United States customary units in all activities.

I can even remember back in the late 70’s learning the metric system in elementary school. We were on our way to switching. Then President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s slammed the breaks on the whole thing.

We’ve all been in this half and half mode ever since. The government and many the goods you buy are officially metric, while everything else in our country is using imperial units.

Doesn’t it sound better to be 110 kg instead of 242.5 lbs. Think about it.

More later. Time to think Metric.
