Just when you thought football season was over a new league pops up.
Welcome to Blog Oklahoma
As I'm recording this, it's the day of the big game between the NFL's top two teams. And then the American football season is over... or is it. I'm happy to announce football will be continuing into the spring with a brand new football league. Let me introduce to you the Alliance of American Football.
The Alliance was founded by TV and film producer Charlie Ebersol and NFL Hall of Famer Bill Polian. It features eight teams with 52-player rosters playing a 10-week regular season which begins this Saturday, February 9, 2019. After the regular season there will be two playoff rounds and a championship game being played in Las Vegas on April 27, 2019.
Now the Alliance of American Football is not going to be in competition with the NFL, like the USFL was in the past. In fact it was announced just last week they have partnered with the NFL. You'll be able to watch many of the Alliance's games on the NFL Network.
Speaking of watching, you'll be able to watch the games this season on CBS, CBS Sports Network, NFL Network, TNT, and B/R Live. As well as on the Alliance's own apps.
So here are this seasons 8 teams. In the Eastern Conference you have: Atlanta Legends, Birmingham Iron, Memphis Express, and Orlando Apollos. In the Western Conference you have: Arizona Hotshots, Salt Lake Stallions, San Antonio Commanders, and San Diego Fleet.
For a few Oklahoma connections to this new league: Jordan Thomas and Zack Sanchez from University of Oklahoma are playing for the San Antonio Commanders; Jordan Sterns from Oklahoma State University is playing for the Salt Lake Stallions; And one time Oklahoma quarterback, Trevor Knight is playing for the Arizona Hotshots.
As I mentioned earlier the first game will be this Saturday, February 9, 2019 between the San Diego Fleet and the San Antonio Commanders at 7 PM Central airing on CBS.
I'm excited for this new league. I know I'm going to be watching this season. I hope you are too. You can find out more information about the Alliance of American Football in the show notes at blogoklahoma.net.
